Fantasy comes to life - 4th Annual Comic Con ’14

What is Comic Con India? It  is a comic-based convention held in India, main edition held annually at New Delhi. The first ever convention was held in 2011 at Delhi Haat. In order to avoid travelling expenses abroad to attend a comic convention, a group of young people in Delhi decided to create one of their own.
The comic industry in India is decadent and needs to be promoted across the whole country. Comics are the first thing a child reads when he’s young. The colorful pictures, the dialogues helps him imagine the whole scene and understand the story better. Tinkle, Chacha Chaudhary, Champak etc these are few comics which have created a great impact on me. The comic writers and artists have not got their due for the work done by them until now.

Comic con India was started in order to grow the Pop(ular) culture in India which was limited in its scope and needed to expand to include various passionate readers. It showcased stalls by several Indian publishing houses including Amar Chitra Katha, Vimanika, Diamond comics, Level10, Campfire and many others.

The 4th Annual Comic Con was held on 7th–9th feb. The first day of the event saw a huge crowd, from movie buffs to graphic novel artists and lovers of all things comic. With this year’s mascot being the Super Kudi, an Indian crossover of the comic character Wonder Woman, the Comic Con started off with a bang. The place was stocked with everything you need to know (or buy) about comic characters- from posters to fun printed T-shirts, from cool bags to Chumbak shorts, from action figures to collectibles etc.

Special guests from abroad were also present at the event. While Mark Waid, the comic author of Superman, was all gung ho about discussing the digital world of comics with his fans, John Layman, the writer of Batman was all set to ensure his fans realise the charm of reading hard copies of comic books. Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba, the twin brothers best known for their works The Umbrella Academy and Casanova, also graced the event. David Lloyd, the British comic artist and illustrator of the popular story V for Vendetta was thrilled to be in India, he also held a session where he read a few paragraphs from V for Vendetta and discussed it with the audience. On day three of the event, Pran, the creator of Chacha Chaudhary was awarded a lifetime achievement award for brining a smile to the face of millions of kids across the country.
Last but not the least, cosplayers who participated in the costume competition came dressed up as their favorite superhero. The winner of each day was awarded a free ticket to New Year Comic con!
